Project description

The objective of this feasibility study was to investigate the opportunities, challenges, risks and costs for the retrofit implementation of a full-scale carbon capture plant. Klemetsrudanlegget AS made a waste-to-energy (WtE) plant with CO2 emissions exceeding 300 000 tons per year available for the study. The feasibility study was based on the most mature and commercial technologies available for carbon capture and storage based on Egergigjenvinningsetaten’s (EGE) set criteria concerning the energy recovery plant at Klemetsrud: current operating data and operating conditions, existing and expected regulatory framework for land and concessions, in addition to data from the parallel technology studies for carbon capture and the transport and interim storage study.

The feasibility study contained also sub-studies performed and reported by four other technology providers: Aker solutions, GE Alstom, MTR and Multiconsult. Citec a Cyient Company, was responsible for managing content, scope limits, needed inputs, communication, total project plan, time schedule and more. We ensured that all sub-studies were using the same structure in their reports. Citec, a Cyient Company, provided recommendations regarding the continuation and direction of the sub-studies work. In addition to Citec´s total setup, the four sub-studies were evaluated, assessed, and compiled into one feasibility report enabling solid decision grounds for the investment. To evaluate and steer the work by the sub-studies the existing WtE plant was modelled by Citec, a Cyient company, using thermodynamic calculation software (ThermoflowTM).

Project description

A chain conveyor is used for proper feeding of the wood into the chipper. It is considerably cheaper when compared to roller conveyor. It also requires less maintenance and is safer to operate. The conveyor has seven chains of which the four feed chains are driven by a hydraulic engine of type CA 50 Hägglunds Compact 30kW. The three side chains are driven by a hydraulic motor of type CA 50 Hägglunds Compact 22kW. A height limiter is mounted to avoid jams caused by logs that are too large being fed into the chipper. In case of a jam, the three side chains will first be driven on reverse to loosen the logs and at the same time, the log lifter located on the side of the chain conveyor will be activated.

A high performance horizontally fed mill with a cutting aperture of 800 mm.

Main components of the machine:

• Cutting board with axle and storage

• Forward and back frames

• Cover for the cutting board.

• Behind the cutter is a large chip pocket, which equalizes the flow to a metering screw carrying chips on through several screw conveyors to the digester house.

Citec, a Cyient Company scope consisted of design engineering of a new wood room line. Citec created a layout based on the customer’s requirements for capacity and physical locations and complete calculations for the chain conveyor, cutter, and chip pocket together with the manufacturing drawings. Citec also calculated and created the following chip pocket as well as designed the metering screw and the included screw conveyor.

When Metso Fiber and GL&V received an order from the distinguished Japanese paper manufacturer Hokuetsu Paper Mills Ltd for a complete screen room, bleach plant and post-screening facilities for one of their four paper mills, the flagship Niigata Mill, Citec, a Cyient company, was given the responsibility of conducting all of the project planning and construction of the pipe systems.
